Erin Axelman

Erin Axelman is a co-director, alongside Sam Eilertsen, of the documentary film Israelism. This film, released in 2023, critically examines the portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within American Jewish institutions. Israelism focuses on the experiences of two young American Jews who were raised to have an unconditional love for Israel but began to question this stance upon witnessing how Israel treats Palestinians. This realization led them, and consequently the filmmakers, to explore a deepening generational divide within the Jewish community regarding its relationship with Israel.

The documentary features interviews with notable figures such as Peter Beinart, Jeremy Ben-Ami, Noam Chomsky, and Abraham Foxman, delving into modern Jewish identity and the shifts occurring within it due to differing views on Israel’s actions toward Palestinians.

Erin Axelman and Sam Eilertsen’s work on Israelism is notable for its exploration of a contentious issue, aiming to shed light on the complex and often polarizing views within the Jewish community regarding Israel. Their approach has sparked discussions and sometimes controversy, reflecting the film’s impact on the dialogue surrounding Jewish identity.
